How to Transition from a UK Student Visa to the Graduate Route

For international students, the UK Graduate Route (often called the Post-Study Work or PSW visa) is the ultimate prize. It grants you the legal right to stay in the UK for two years (or three years for PhD graduates) after you finish your course, allowing you to work in almost any job without needing an employer to sponsor you.

However, securing this visa is not simply a matter of handing in your final dissertation and clicking "apply." The UK Home Office has implemented strict eligibility checkpoints in 2026. A simple misunderstanding of your university's timeline can result in an immediate rejection.

Rule 1: The "Course Completion" Trap

This is where 80% of students fail. You cannot apply for the Graduate Visa just because you submitted your final assignment or took your last exam. You also do not have to wait until your official graduation ceremony.

You can only apply after your university has officially notified the UK Home Office that you have successfully completed your course. Your university will send you an email explicitly stating: "We have reported your successful completion to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)." If you submit your visa application even one day before this notification is sent, your application will be invalid and rejected.

Rule 2: You Must Apply from Inside the UK

To be eligible, you must hold a valid Tier 4 or Student route visa at the time of your application. Most importantly, you must be physically located inside the UK when you submit the online form and prove your identity via the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app.

If your course finishes and you fly back to your home country for a holiday, and your student visa expires while you are overseas, you have permanently lost your right to the Graduate Route. You cannot apply for it from outside the UK.
