What Germany actually requires

Most of what is written about studying in Germany stops at “tuition-free”. These are the things that decide whether an application succeeds.

Tuition, and the exception

Public universities charge no tuition in most federal states, regardless of nationality. Baden-Württemberg is the main exception, charging non-EU students a fee per semester. Everywhere, you pay a semester contribution of roughly €150 to €350, which usually includes a transport pass for the term.

The blocked account

You must show €11,904 for the year — €992 a month — in a blocked account before applying for the visa. This is the part most often misunderstood: the money is not a fee. It stays yours, and is released to you monthly after you arrive. The figure is reviewed annually, so confirm it before transferring anything.

If you hold a WASSCE

A West African secondary certificate does not usually qualify you for direct entry to a German university. The route runs through a Studienkolleg, a foundation year ending in an assessment examination. This adds a year, and it needs planning for now rather than discovering later.

Certification of your documents

Applicants from some countries must obtain an APS certificate verifying their academic documents before a university will consider them. Whether it applies to you depends on where you studied, and it takes weeks, so it is worth confirming early.

Language, and which one

Many master's programmes are taught in English and need no German for admission. You will still need German to live, work and stay — and B1 or B2 changes what employers will consider you for. German-taught programmes generally require C1. Start before you apply, not after.

After you graduate

Graduates can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for work, and move to a work permit or EU Blue Card once employed. Germany also runs the Chancenkarte, a points-based card allowing qualified people to enter and look for work without an offer in hand.
