Language Requirements

Many programmes are taught in French and require B2. Others are taught in English and need none for admission, though you will need French to live and work there. We teach to the level your route requires.

CROUS student housing is the cheapest option and heavily oversubscribed, so it needs applying for early. We help with that and with private lets, which usually want a French guarantor.

What France actually requires

France is cheaper than most people expect and more procedural than most people expect. These are the parts that decide whether an application works.

Tuition is subsidised, not free

Public university fees for non-EU students are around €2,770 a year at bachelor's level and €3,770 at master's. Some institutions waive the difference between those and the EU rate, so the figure you are quoted may be lower. Grandes Écoles and private business schools charge considerably more.

Campus France comes before the university

Applications from most countries must go through the Études en France platform, including an interview at the Campus France office, before a consulate will accept a visa application. It has its own deadlines, usually earlier than the universities' own, and missing them costs you the intake rather than the application.

Proof of funds

The official minimum is €615 a month, so €7,380 for the year. In practice consulates increasingly expect more for Paris, where rent alone can exceed that. Budget realistically rather than to the minimum, because a thin financial case is the most common reason these applications fail.

You can work, and you can claim housing support

Student visas allow up to 964 hours of work a year, roughly 20 hours a week. International students can also claim CAF, a monthly housing allowance that meaningfully reduces rent. Both are legitimate and both are routinely missed by people who never apply for them.

Two things after arrival

Your visa must be validated online within three months of arriving, with a tax stamp purchased separately. There is also the CVEC, a compulsory annual student contribution paid before enrolment. Neither is expensive; both cause problems when missed.

After you graduate

Master's graduates can apply for a temporary residence permit to look for work or start a business, giving twelve months to find something in your field before you need an employer to sponsor you.
